"In the early months of
recovery, only those closest to me knew that the smile on my face each day was
part of my makeup. Apply lipstick. Smile. It was hard work to pretend to be
happy but people really didn’t want to be burdened with my sorrow. As a result,
I never really grieved for the loss of innocence, security, trust and
independence. Grieving, in my mind, was weak. I was afraid to be weak."
